Our Youth Athletic Development programs

At our Melbourne-based physio clinic, we are deeply committed to developing young athletes the right way. Our evidence-informed approach is designed to support youth through all stages of their sporting journey—from active children to high-performing teens. Our programs are grounded in internationally recognised youth development models and are tailored to deliver both performance enhancement and injury resilience.

Youth Athletic Development = Building Stronger, Safer, and Smarter Athletes

What sets us apart?

  • Elite Experience: Our staff have hands-on experience working in elite-level youth sport, from youth representative athletes, private school programs to top youth teams.
  • Academic Excellence: We’ve taught youth athletic development at the university level, ensuring our methods are not only practical but backed by the latest research.
  • Coaching Depth: With countless hours spent in the gym and on the field, we’re experts in teaching movement patterns that are fundamental to both sport performance and long-term physical development.
  • Performance and symmetry testing: this allows the ability to track progress, identify deficits and enable accurate programming to achieve results.

Why youth-specific training matters:

Youth athletes are not adult athletes, and therefore their injury management, assessment, performance training and supervision should be different. Research shows that poorly managed training loads, sub-optimal movement control and early sport specialisation can lead to a spike in injuries during adolescence—particularly around peak height velocity (PHV), when bodies are growing rapidly. Part of working with Athletes Edge Physiotherapy ensures we not only assess and monitor for factors linked with injury, but help build physical capacity to reduce injury risk and improve performance. Our programming reflects key findings from the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and Youth Physical Development (YPD) models. These highlight the importance of:

    • Fundamental movement skills and motor patterns as a foundation for all sporting ability.
    • Strength as a cornerstone of youth athletic development and improved sporting performance.
    • Neuromuscular training programs which significantly reduces injury risk.
    • Individualised programming, based on maturity status—not just age or sport—so each athlete trains at the right intensity at the right time.
    • Supervised, technique focused training to build foundations, reduce injury risk and set your children up for long term athletic success.

Our mission is to develop resilient, well-rounded athletes who not only perform but stay in the game long-term. Whether your child is recovering from injury, looking to take the next step in sport, or just starting their athletic journey, we offer a safe, structured and high-performance environment that supports movement mastery, confidence, and lifelong physical literacy.

We work closely with parents, coaches, schools, and medical professionals, making us a trusted partner in your child’s athletic development.

Frequently Asked Questions

The concept of youth athletic development is founded in science, with the principles of setting age-appropriate foundations, and building upon these over time, to enhance the physical and psychosocial development of youth athletes.

In short, yes! Strong research studies have demonstrated lower injury rates in strength-based interventions than many sports and other activities. However, there are a few key recommendations in the evidence guidelines, including that youth athletes are supervised, taught the correct technique, and given appropriate guidance on how to progress.

Typically, yes! Improving strength and movement control has been to show enhance many of the athletic performance variables and outcomes, including faster running speed, improved jumping height and power, better muscle strength (upper/lower body), improved self confidence, reduce injury risk, and so much more!

Firstly, organise an initial 1:1 appointment where we will conduct an assessment and decide on the best course of action. The next step will likely involve some kind of physical assessments, and putting together an individualised program to enhance your child’s athletic development.

Definitely! With over 30 years of combined experience working in the industry, including elite youth sport (soccer, athletics, rowing and more!), our staff are well placed to help your child succeed. Additionally, we have experience educating at university level on youth athletic development, highlighting the expertise and evidence underpinning our youth development programs.
